Wedding dress shopping - where to start?

Congratulations! You’re engaged!

You’ve probably celebrated, told everyone the news and maybe spent a slightly unhealthy amount of time on Pinterest.

And now comes the question: “Where do I actually start with wedding dress shopping?”

If the thought of finding your wedding dress feels exciting but also a little overwhelming, you’re not alone. There are hundreds of dresses, dozens of designers, different boutiques, different price points… and somehow you’re expected to know what you want before you’ve even tried anything on.

The good news? You really don’t need to have all the answers.

Wedding dress shopping should be a fun part of getting married, not something you need to have completely figured out before you begin.

If you're a bride-to-be wondering when to start, what to look for and how to prepare for your first bridal appointment, here's a few tips on where I'd start & what I recommend.

1. Start with your wedding date & venue

Your wedding date & venue are one of the first things you’ll want to know before booking bridal appointments.

Then as a general rule, I recommend starting your wedding dress search around 12–18 months before your wedding. This gives you plenty of time to find the right dress without feeling rushed.

Most made-to-order wedding dresses take around 6 months to arrive, and you’ll also need to allow time for alterations once your dress arrives.

That doesn't mean you can't find a dress with less time (you absolutely can) but having that extra breathing room makes the whole process much calmer. And calm is exactly how we think wedding dress shopping should feel.

2. Decide on your dress budget

Before you even start shopping and fall completely in love with a dress that you can't afford, it’s worth having a realistic idea of what you’d like to spend.

Your wedding dress budget doesn’t need to be an exact figure, but having a comfortable range will help you choose boutiques and designers that are right for you.

And remember to think about the rest of your bridal look too. Your dress may not be the only thing you'll want to budget for - alterations, a veil, shoes and accessories can all add to the overall cost.

My advice? Be honest about your budget from the beginning.

There’s absolutely no benefit to trying on dresses that are way outside what you’re comfortable spending.

3. Start gathering inspiration - but don't try to find your dress online

Pinterest and Instagram are brilliant places to start.

Save the dresses you love.

Create a moodboard.

Have fun with it.

But don't worry about creating a definitive list of exactly what you want.

In fact, I always say: Your Pinterest board is inspiration, not a shopping list.

You might think you want a particular neckline because you’ve saved 30 dresses with one, only to try it on and realise you love something completely different.

Instead of just looking at the dress as a whole, try to notice what you love about it. Is it the fabric? The shape? The neckline? The simplicity? The movement? The structure? The delicate details? Those little details can be much more useful when you start trying dresses on.

4. Find a bridal boutique that feels right for you

Not every bridal boutique is the same - and that's a good thing.

Some are large, busy boutiques with lots of designers and dozens of dresses. Others are smaller and more intimate. Some specialise in a particular style or price point. There really is a boutique for everyone.

Before booking an appointment, have a look at:

  • Which designers they stock

  • Their typical dress prices

  • Their sample sizes

  • Their appointment style

  • Their reviews

  • Their location

  • And, most importantly, whether the overall experience feels like you

If you're wedding dress shopping in Manchester, there are lots of fantastic bridal boutiques to choose from, so don't be afraid to spend a little time finding somewhere you feel comfortable. At The Corner Atelier we specalise on a calm, intimate & personal shopping experience. We want your journey to be exciting and not overwhelming.

Your wedding dress appointment should feel like an experience you’re excited about - not something you’re nervous about getting “right”.

5. Don't worry about knowing what suits you

This is one of the biggest things I want brides to know. You do not need to know what style of wedding dress you want before you go wedding dress shopping.

You don't need to know whether you're a fitted bride, an A-line bride, a ballgown bride or a minimalist bride. And you definitely don't need to know what “suits your body shape”. That's what trying dresses on is for. Sometimes the dress you think you'll love isn't the dress that makes you feel amazing. Sometimes the dress you would never have picked from a rail ends up being the one you can't stop thinking about.

Go in with an open mind.

You might surprise yourself.

6. Think carefully about who you bring

This one is so important (I cannot emphasis that enough).

Wedding dress shopping can be emotional, exciting and a little overwhelming - and having the right people around you makes such a difference.

You don't need a huge entourage. In fact, sometimes fewer opinions make it much easier to listen to your own. Bring the people whose opinions you genuinely trust. The people who know you, understand your style and most importantly, want you to feel like you. I always say less is more!

And if you'd rather shop alone? That's completely fine too. There is absolutely nothing wrong with coming to your appointment by yourself. You might actually find that it gives you more space to focus on how you feel in each dress.

7. Book your first wedding dress appointment

Once you've found a bridal boutique you love, book your first appointment and try not to overthink it.

At The Corner Atelier, our appointments are designed to feel calm, personal and completely pressure-free. You'll have the boutique to yourself, we'll talk about your wedding, your style and what you've been drawn to, and then we'll start trying dresses.

You don't need to arrive with a list of dresses you must try. We'll work through it together. And I'll always give you my honest opinion - whether that's “this is absolutely you” or “let's try a few more”. Because I'm not interested in convincing you to buy a dress. I want you to leave feeling excited, confident and completely comfortable with your decision.

8. Don't put pressure on yourself to have a movie moment

This might be the most important one - please believe me when you read this:

Not every bride cries.

Not every bride gets goosebumps.

Not every bride instantly knows.

And that's okay!

Finding your wedding dress doesn't have to look like it does in the films. For some brides, it's an immediate “this is it.” For others, it's a quiet feeling that grows as they think about the dress, try it again and imagine themselves wearing it on their wedding day.

There's no right reaction.

The only thing that really matters is how you feel.

At The Corner Atelier, I always say: When it's the one, you feel beautiful and are excited to wear it.

You shouldn't feel pressured into saying yes because someone else loves it, because you've been shopping all day or because you're worried you'll never find anything better.

You should feel like you.

So, where do you actually start?

Honestly? You don't need to have it all figured out.

Start with your wedding date.

Work out your budget.

Save a few images you love.

Find a bridal boutique that feels like the right fit for you.

You don't need to know your perfect silhouette.

You don't need to know your neckline.

You don't need to know which designer you want.

And you definitely don't need to have your entire bridal look planned.

You just need to start.

And hopefully, somewhere along the way, you'll find the dress that makes you feel like the most beautiful version of yourself.

If you're looking for a personal, pressure-free wedding dress shopping experience in Manchester, I'd love to welcome you to The Corner Atelier.

One bride at a time, with plenty of time, honest opinions and no hard sell. Because wedding dress shopping should be something you enjoy - not something you need to survive.

Wedding Dress Shopping FAQs

When should I start wedding dress shopping?

We recommend starting around 12–18 months before your wedding. This gives you plenty of time to find your dress, place your order and allow for alterations before the big day.

If you're getting married sooner than that, don't panic. There are still options available, depending on the designer, dress and timeframe.

How many wedding dresses should I try on?

There’s no magic number.

Some brides find their dress at their first appointment, while others need to try several different styles before they know what feels right.

Try not to measure your experience against anyone else's. There is no prize for finding your dress quickly, and there’s no “right” number of dresses to try.

What should I take to my first wedding dress appointment?

You really don't need to bring much.

A few inspiration images, your wedding date and an idea of your budget are a great place to start.

Wear underwear you feel comfortable in and, if you already have your wedding shoes, you can bring those too - although they're certainly not essential for your first appointment.

Most importantly, come as you are. You don't need to arrive knowing exactly what you want.

How many people should I bring wedding dress shopping?

There’s no right answer.

Bring the people whose opinions you trust and who make you feel confident. If you know you'll feel overwhelmed with lots of opinions, keep your group small. At The Corner Atelier we allow 3 or 4 guests depending on your appointment type and we truely feel this is the perfect number!

And if you'd rather come alone, that's completely okay too.

Your appointment is about finding your dress, so choose the people who will help you listen to yourself.

Do I need to know what style of wedding dress I want?

Absolutely not.

Your first wedding dress appointment is a chance to explore different silhouettes, fabrics, necklines and details and discover what makes you feel amazing.

You might arrive thinking you want one thing and leave loving something completely different. That's part of the fun.

How long does a wedding dress appointment take?

At The Corner Atelier, our First Impressions appointments are 1.5 hours, giving you plenty of time to settle in, talk through what you're looking for and try a selection of dresses without feeling rushed. We also have time to enjoy a special yes moment when you find the one.

How much should I spend on a wedding dress?

There isn't one “right” wedding dress budget.

The important thing is to choose a budget you're genuinely comfortable with and then look for boutiques and designers within that range.

Remember to factor in alterations and any accessories you'd like, such as your veil.
